The Bonnie Hunt Show

by Chuck Campbell 12. July 2010 18:31

Hi, everybody!!  Today I woke up to a mass of new friend requests on facebook and a ton of emails, all of which referenced our appearance on The Bonnie Hunt Show.  What a wonderful surprise!!!  Thank you all who have written.  Unfortunately, today's show was a repeat.  The original airing of that show was back at the begining of March, before the drawing actually took place.  :(  We actually drew the winning ticket on another episode of Bonnie's show which aired on March 31st.  The winner was a nurse who already lived in Florida.  I do thank you all very much for your kind words, though.

Just so you know, the raffle was a huge success and we raised most of the money needed for the transplant itself.  However, we will continue our fundraising efforts in order to raise money for the very expensive post-transplant medications and care.  So, anything you can do will be greatly appreciated and much needed.  If you would still like to make a donation, even though the raffle has already taken place, you can go to www.ntafund.org/find-a-patient/profile/index.cfm/patient/E7315AC1-DACB-FB82-741C9F977BA3B88D.  Again, thank you all very much and God bless.

Sincerely thankful,

Chuck Campbell

Dear Chuck,
I had seen you on Bonnie Hunt's show back when it originally aired in March and was glad to see that show as a rerun knowing that you would benefit from a second airing.
My sister died of COPD several years ago. She was nearly 70 and had smoked for over 50 years. Even after she was diagnosed she refused to quit.
Were you or are you a smoker? And if so, have you quit?
If you were a smoker, have you used your experiences now in the midst of this terrible disease to be an anti-smoking billboard?
You may not remember Yul Brenner who died in 1985 from lung cancer. Before his death he chose to make a PSA and in that brief message he pleaded with all who were listening to stop smoking if they did smoke and not to start if they had not yet started.
He was a remarkable man.
You have a tremendous chance for recovery. Medical treatments have improved vastly since my sister was diagnosed. And if you were a smoker, please make bold statements about the danger of smoking. Please.
We have donated to your cause but more importantly, you will be in our prayers until you are well again.
Sincerely,
The Hickman's

Hi Chuck- I stayed home from work today to take care of my 10 month old son who has the flu...we ended up stumbling accross the Bonnie Hunt show and so glad we did...your story really touched us and I will be keeping u in my prayers.  I think you're going to be ok, and back to playing around with your kids in no time!  Also don't worry about the show being a re-run and ppl missing the drawing...I think people were touched just to go on the site and donate- raffle or not.  God bless you and your family!

About the author

I was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2005. Today my lung function is only 14% of full capacity. COPD is a progressive disease that affects the lungs. The condition worsens with time and is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. But, due to the fact that I am in relatively good health, other than the COPD, I am a very good candidate for a lung transplant.  As of Aug. 6, 2010 I am listed on the UNOS double lung transplant waiting list at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, VA.
